This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.
On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”
Jesus to Sister Mary of the Holy Trinity
When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.
On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.
The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."
If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

Hidden Jesus
I had been thinking why Jesus had left Himself to us hidden under the sacramental species — it is so difficult, I thought, to love what looks like a piece of bread, even though you know it is the Body and Blood and Soul and Divinity of Jesus — and that is what Jesus wants more than anything else, for us to love Him. Why then, I thought, did He not leave Himself more sensibly among us?

As I was thinking this, it was as though He asked: Do you remember My words, ‘When you did it to the least of My little ones, you did it unto Me?‘ And do you remember My last commandment, that night when I instituted this Sacrament of My Love? How I asked you not to love Me, but to love one another? And now you can understand that I have left My Humanity hidden in Myself in order that you might love My Humanity and My Divinity in one another.
And this is the way I want you to understand the Sacrament of My Love, that just as by faith you see My Humanity and Divinity in the appearance of bread, so by faith you must see My Humanity and Divinity in the human face of your neighbor. I have given your neighbor as the sensible manifestation of My Humanity, as the instrument through whom you might love Me in him and through him, and him in Me. That is the meaning of My Sacrament of Love."

The Redeemer's Call to Consecrated Souls
(excerpt # 4 from the book of eccles. approved locutions by Our Lord to a contemplative French nun)
To imitate and touch the Mercy of your heavenly Father and by it to draw Mercy down upon the poor world, be merciful like your heavenly Father, and do not grow weary gazing at the Heart of Mary, the most accessible model I have given.
Mistress as well as Mother of Mercy.  Learn from Her to be like Her, each of you, to be merciful mother to souls.  Go to her school:  She will teach you the great secret of maternal mercy.

See most particularly the child in every soul, a potential Jesus, a Jesus to be realized, a Christ to be engendered so that the circle of the Father’s great family may be widened. Work of love that inspires pity and compassion because this potential Jesus in every soul in some way is a Jesus in peril, a Jesus exposed to contradiction, attacked, oppressed by thousands of enemies stirred up by my great enemy, Satan.
A Jesus awaiting deliverance, therefore well-deserving of attracting a mother’s compassion, who thus sees in each soul a Jesus to be saved, a Jesus to be freed from the foe’s captivity, a Jesus to make flourish in some way, a Jesus to be raised up, as this word so profoundly puts it, an ascension of life rising from the depths of a life created in the divine image. And finally, a Jesus to be offered to the Father.

The art and the secret of the maternal apostolate of Mary is to bring forth souls to the Father by bringing forth Jesus in souls.  All the love that She has for her Infant-God She bears to all the children of God, brothers of her Jesus, and especially to consecrated souls, they who are privileged among the privileged.
Aides of her maternal love, meditate and meditate again on the sweet gentleness of charity, goodness, and condescension that you must have for souls that I have given you to defend, souls in which my Life is ever more in peril in this hour of such infernal, satanic contradiction!

(See other excerpts:  1,    2,    3)
"The great saints have labored for the glory of God, but I, who am a very little soul, work only to give Him pleasure. I shall be happy to bear the greatest sufferings if only to gain His smile even once."
St. Therese, Nov. Verba, p 56
Therese needs to get away from any preoccupation with herself, with her own goodness or greatness, with any achievement of her own because that would interfere with her love. Her very greatness is in her mission to purify love, to distinguish the love of God from the love of achievement — even achievement for God — which is the curse of the modern mind. We have come to replace man for God, even in our spirituality! Therese‘s vocation is to restore that purity of love by which the lover is lost in the Beloved, not in his own work and achievement ‘for the Beloved.‘
Jesus, You know that our faith in Your Love is a gift, and that it is only by Your grace that we can love You as much as You want to be loved. If, then, You want to be loved so very much, give me this grace, the grace to believe in Your Love, the grace to love You as much as You desire me to love You, only at this moment — Father, give us this day our daily bread!
Sins of impurity are only the ultimate reduction, and the sign, therefore, of sins of spiritual impurity and self-complacency. If God permits them, it is only because we have grown insensitive to our spiritual self-love.
The condition of acting perfectly is to have nothing but Jesus and Mary from whom to act. They act totally only through our nothingness —  "Blessed are the poor in spirit" who have nothing to impede the action of Jesus and Mary in them. And everything that happens to us is the work of Their Love, to move us to rely totally on the Father in Them, to be totally poor.
Here we see the work of the Holy Spirit.  For it is the Spirit of wisdom who teaches us to seek only the Father in Jesus and Mary, while the Spirit of knowledge discerns the foolishness of human providence, moving us by the Spirit of counsel to turn away from human wisdom to Jesus, moved too by the Spirit of fear as we understand what we are in ourselves, and how we act when we are in ourselves.
Only from the rightness of this "now" will the "after" be right — only from the love of Jesus in Mary now will the next "now" proceed.

You are feeling very close to Me. Then something happens, and you feel that you are not pleasing Me, and you are disturbed. Then, suddenly, you realize that I am loving you now, and that I am waiting for you and nothing else matters. Then, in My arms, you
realize that without intending it, you had allowed some created good, the thing you had been looking for in order to come to Me to please Me, to come between you and Myself. And then you know that My Love has removed that impediment and you love Me — all.

As the moth is attracted by the warmth of the flame, and by its light, until its tired little body is consumed by the fire, so, Jesus, draw me to the warmth of Your Love, and to the Truth of Your Light, until I am consumed with all the lies of my being by the Fire of Your Love, and I am transformed into the Truth of Your Light, forever and ever. Amen.
"Every day will I bless thee, and I will praise thy name forever and ever."
PS. 144:2
The name of a thing signifies its essence, and therefore, the Name of Jesus signifies the hidden, unknown Essence of the Lord, and we are in contact with Him when His Name is in our mouth. "Out of the mouths of infants and sucklings thou hast perfected praise."
