This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.
On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”
Jesus to Sister Mary of the Holy Trinity
When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.
On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.
The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."
If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

The Meaning of Our Sins
This is the meaning of the sins and miseries which
I permit you to experience. They are the instruments
by which I would convince you to come to Me, to give
Me your nothingness. The devils in hell, too, are My
instruments, whom I use to overwhelm you with the
conviction of your own futility in yourself. You must
realize too, that My work in you is done in time,
and that what is health to your soul at this moment
can be poison to it at the next moment.
You must understand this in order to cooperate with Me as I sanctify you. For otherwise your mind will grasp what I am doing at this moment and then you will try to force My Will to serve your understanding at the next moment. In this way you prevent Me from sanctifying you as rapidly as I would wish — because you are constantly bringing your thoughts and acts to Me, and all I can use is your nothingness.

Understand this, too, that the bitterness you experience is only incidental to My teaching you this lesson, “My conversation hath no bitterness.” But that is realized only when you turn totally to Me, when you bring Me your nothingness, and that from moment to moment.

I hate 'problems!'
What you think is a problem, is
your misunderstanding of My Love — a Love that provides the solution you need at each moment.
The real problem is you, and your desire to convince yourself of virtues you do not possess.
The real problem is your resistance to the truth,
the truth that you are dead in yourself,
that your life is only in Me.
But when I provide the solution to that problem
in the things I send you, you in your blindness and
pride make a 'problem' out of My solution — because
your problem is at bottom how to be happy and
contented without Me.

Whenever you are unhappy it is because something
is keeping you from Me — now!
Without realizing it,
you are looking for something other than Myself to
unite you with Me — but there is nothing. That is
your illness. You have to be united with Me in what
I give you at this moment — or you cannot be united
with Me at all. That is why it is so important for you to meditate, not only on the truth of My Love for
you, not only on the actuality of My Love — you must
believe, not only that I am loving you at this moment,
but that I am providing, by My Loving Providence,
everything you need to be united with Me at this
moment. What else would you want for your happiness?

Understand My need to make you happy.
I cannot bear to see you sad and depressed.
I want you to be joyful and contented at each moment — and you persist in looking for something other than what I give you to make you happy.
It is true, you need many, many things —
but the one thing you need at this moment is what
I give you at this moment. Come to Me, therefore,
and take your delight in Me. Do you not see that is
what I want? and I am God. Therefore, you have all
you need now.
It is because of your impurity, your
desire for things outside of Me, that you cannot take
your delight in Me. Do you not see? Your best gift
is the one I give you at this very moment.

I want your life in Me to be a movement
from joy to joy.
You are most pleasing to Me when you are most joyful
because then your will is one thing with Mine.
"He who has shall receive. He who has not, what he
has shall be taken away from him.* Yes, that is true
even in the natural order. It is the seed which has
life in its beginning that receives the perfection
of its life as it becomes the mature plant.
It is the animal united to the object of its desire by its
senses that pursues that object until it is one with
it physically. And even in the order of non-living
things, it is the body which has begun to move that
moves farther. There is no process by which it begins
to move, by which it gradually gets into motion:
either it is moving or it is not moving. Yes, the
beginning of all things is instantaneous. After that
there can be a gradual development — but the beginning is all at once.
Do you see, then, that in every order,
those that have, those that have the beginning, shall
receive the perfection of that beginning, but those
that do not have the beginning cannot receive any more?
Thus I say "Come over to Me, all you who desire Me
and be filled with My fruits." Come right away, do not
seek any preparation to come — because only I can give you that beginning from which you will receive My fruits.
Ah, if only you knew the years you have wasted,
the work, the energy and the thought, thinking you could prepare yourself for your union with Me!
Do you not see?
I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Me is your
joy, My joy which I give to you with My Peace. There
is no price. You who in your poverty are without
the price, without the virtue and the strength to find
happiness in yourself, come and buy of Me. Because
then you have the only price I require — the desire of
Me in your own poverty —
"Come over to Me, all you who desire Me!"
Do you see? only those who desire Me are
invited, only those who are poor. Do you not see that
what keeps you from Me, from your joy, from My Peace
that I would give you, is your pride which still
seeks to buy what can only be had for nothing?
And now listen, this coming to Me in your poverty is
not something that you do only once. As each cell
of your body must be nurtured each moment by the blood coming from your heart, or else it will die, so you must be receiving My Blood, the Blood of My Sacred Heart, each moment, or your soul will die.

You must understand this, you must realize that your sufficiency is only in Me. As the sufficiency of the plant is not in itself, but in the earth in which its roots seek food, in the sun to which it turns, in the air in
which it lives, so your sufficiency is only in Me.
At each moment of your life My Loving Providence
provides just what you need in that moment — but
you must be receptive to what I would give you.

Consider the delicate little hairs of the plant's roots. It is through these that the plant receives its nourishment. Do you see? The sturdy strength of the great tree has its source in the tender little hairs of its roots, owes its strength to that which is weakest in it.  And so it is with you —
it is by the delicacy of your own weakness, by that
loving interchange between us when you are receptive
to Me in the knowledge of your own weakness, that
you derive all your strength. At each moment there
transpires this great Mystery of My Being flowing
into yours as your soul is delicately poised in My
Heart, all weak and all trusting, in the dark silence
of your adoration, expecting all things from Me,
quietly delighting in what I choose to give you at
this moment, seeking nothing, only content that you
are in Me and I in you, your desire now becomes My
Desire, your love My Love. My beloved little child, let
Me give Myself to you from each moment to the next!
Bring Me your weakness in the delicacy of your
silence, the silence which is the death of all
your desires, the emptiness which only I can fill — and
on which I, even I, your God, depend — even as the
earth depends on the tender, fragile roots which it
embraces, and fills.
Everything that I want to give you proceeds from My
Plenty and your nothingness,. When you are silent in
My Heart, wanting nothing, My Love secretly and
silently pours into your soul — and then, suddenly,
you realize that in wanting nothing you possess
everything. That is the secret of My Joy and My
Peace — waiting, waiting, for you — and filling you
only in the poverty of your silence.
I can only love the you that you are right now — and
you always want to give Me someone else! You are
convinced that I cannot love you with your defects,
and since your defects are always before you, you
are never moved to come to Me. I want to love you as
you are, but you do not let Me — you never take
yourself for granted — and the worst of it is that you
think you are pleasing Me when in reality you are frustrating Me, because the one thing I want is you,
as you are, with all the defects, all the inclination
to sin you see in yourself.
When will you believe this? Why, when you become
aware of some evil inclination in yourself, do you
immediately feel forsaken? Do you not see that you
have more confidence in the power of evil in your
soul than in My Goodness working in you?
But understand Me! When I criticize you this way, it is
not that I want you to change yourself. Do you see?
Your very defect operates in the way you understand
what I am telling you to correct. So now you think
you have to change this disposition in order to
please Me. But tell Me, if you have had it your whole
life long, do you think you are going to be able to
change it just by becoming aware of it? And do you
think it is I Who am asking the impossible of you —
or yourself? No, what I want is only for you to believe
as best you can that I am in you, that I want to love
you — to give you what you need at this very moment.
I demand nothing of you. I only beg you to let Me
love you, to let Me overcome in you what you cannot
overcome yourself.
Do you see how necessary it is to correct your false
conscience which keeps you from coming to Me, the
One Person you need, and this in the guise of piety?
Your false conscience keeps telling you that you cannot
come to Me because you are not good enough, keeping
you sad and depressed, while all the time the truth
is that that is just why you should come to Me —
because you are not good enough — to let Me love you
and make you good!
