This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.
On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”
Jesus to Sister Mary of the Holy Trinity
When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.
On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.
The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."
If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

I am beginning to see more and more how abandonment to God’s Love entails perfect self-discipline.
For if I "depend" on God’s Love and do not strive to remove the impediments to His Love, by the use of rational discipline, I am asking God to confirm me in my own sins.
It is true that the first thing of all, which is
so frequently forgotten, is the truth of His Love,
and that, particularly for a soul that has been
disturbed, too much cannot be done to confirm him
in the conviction that he is loved, not only that he is
loved but that he is loved solely because of the
Goodness of God. And this conviction is like a seed
which will then grow by seeking more and more to
remove the impediments to this Love for which alone
the soul lives. And the desire to remove those impedi
ments is the beginning of real and true discipline. For
now the soul no longer seeks, as it did so much in the
past, to prove to itself that it deserves to be loved.
Feast of the Sacred Heart, 1959
My dearest child, do you know what dilates your heart, opening it totally to My Love?
It is to know My Love, not only in Itself, but as it knows your sins and wretchedness, loving you in the depths of My Knowledge as My Love penetrates the depths of your misery.
My child, you do not understand, but it is your own
guilt, hidden and unacknowledged in your fears and
misgivings, buried in the depths of your soul, that
keeps your heart constrained and unopened to My Love.
But when I touch the depths of your misery with the
Infinite Compassion of My Love, when you know that
the very Heart that is loving you knows everything
hateful and detestable in your soul, knows it
infinitely more perfectly than you could ever know
it, when you realize that it is this Heart which
is overwhelmed with Love for you, feeling your miseries as Its very own, then, in a moment, your heart is opened to Mine — all —  and in Me you realize that it was always Myself you were seeking to love, that your sins were only the straying of My little sheep looking for Me — only the preparation for this happy day when you have found Me — and now you are mine forever. This is the secret of My Magdalene and I give it to you.

The gift I desire you to give Me at this moment is the
gift I make possible for you to give Me at this moment — the gift of yourself, just as you are. Do not
try to give Me what you are not — you can only give
Me what you are — what you have received — and what you have received is what you are at this moment, your actual being with all its miseries and imperfections.
You must understand Me — what I want is to be
permitted to make you perfect by My Love. To do this
you must give Me yourself as you are — and to do that
you must understand above everything else, that I
want you now, just the way you are. And if you look
into yourself, you will discern that you are constantly
trying to give Me something you do not have — something you do not have because I do not want you to have it.
Do you understand, then, that in order to love Me as
I desire to be loved, you must feel that you are
accepted at all times, at every moment?
I do everything to convince you of this, because it is so, but the devil and your own false conscience have deformed you and confirmed you in the vicious habit of judging that I am constantly asking you to give Me something you cannot give because you do not have it — because I have not given it to you.
You must learn to understand that all your deficiencies, even those that come from your past sins and vicious habits, are part of My Loving Providence for you, and that it is just with those deficiencies, just the way you are now, that I would love you. Therefore you must overcome the habit of judging how you would make yourself acceptable to Me. When you do this you are putting your providence, your wisdom before Mine. It is My Wisdom that tells you "The way you are acceptable to Me, the way I want to Love you, is the way you are now, with all your defects and deficiencies. I could wipe them out in a moment if I wanted to, but then I could not love you the way I want to love you, the way you are - now."

When I take everything else away from you, and you
have nothing except My Name, Jesus and Mary, and when you say these Names with joy and contentedness, My joy is so great that I would create the universe once again and die on the Cross once more, just to hear you speak My Name and the Name of My Blessed Mother.
At that moment, too, not only do I forget
your sins, but I am glad for them, because they have
brought you to rejoice in Me alone.
The relation with God has no dimension. It is now —
now or never. God is out of time, and eternally He
waits for your realization of Him — now. It is not,
therefore, a matter of being converted once and for all.  Each moment is a little conversion, and a little
death, and His delight is to be with the children
of men, who, because they are so little and helpless,
are always turning to Him.

0 Jesus, I am in love with Truth, and the lies I have made  of my being nail me to the Cross with you.

Remember this! When you suffer, whatever the cause, I am asking you to be separated from something you love very much so that I can give Myself to you that much more.

The Parable of the Eleventh Hour

Those who are called at the eleventh hour are
ourselves — being so little and weak, we cannot work
all day, going through terrible purgations in order
to come to the love of the Father: we have to begin
at the top — because we have no strength, no virtue.
All we can do is love, and we must know that we are loved at every moment or we go to pieces. And then
the strong ones, the virtuous, are scandalized by
us — who are we to be associating with them, getting
the same reward? And then if you will observe the
Gospel closely, you will notice something very
wonderful and very consoling to us little, weak ones.
For not only do we get the same reward — we are
chosen; "For many are called but few are chosen."
And who could the 'chosen’ be if they are not the
little, weak ones, called at the last hour, called,
that is, in our own time. And why are they chosen?
Because in their weakness they manifest the power
of God Who came to save what was lost, Whose delight is to be with the children of men.

And so let us, little children, love one another
as John begged us to, knowing how much we are loved by a Father Who takes such loving compassion on our weakness, Who delights in giving Himself to us
because we are so small — so small that we must at
each moment receive everything from Him — even as His Only-Begotten Son receives everything from Him.
Holy Spirit of Truth I adore you!
Come into my heart,
take possession of my very being, so that I may be
all permeated by you, so that I may know the utter
purity of your love in the wretchedness of my misery,
so that I may know the depth of Your Love as it
embraces that misery. Remove all my servile fears
in the fortitude of Your Spirit, even as that same
Spirit enlightens me to know that I am loved only
because of the Goodness and Mercy of God, so that
I may not be tempted to make excuses in sin where
no excuses are needed.
0 Holy Spirit of Truth,
enlighten my mind to seek only the Light of Your
Wisdom, ever, suspicious of my own understanding
as the slave of my concupiscence and of my duplicity,
and of that self-justification which closes my soul
to Your love; but draw all the strength of my
affections to the Father as I am conformed to Him,
always more, in His Son, in Mary, that my soul may be
healed and purified in the ecstasy of Your loving
embrace. 0 Holy Spirit of Truth I adore You!

It is the struggle between what the Father sends by
the Son — the perfect expression of His perfect Love
and Providence, and what we conceive to be necessary by our providence, that creates all the unhealthy tensions of the soul.
Remember this, whenever you become aware of a
weakness or evil inclination in yourself, it is My
Voice saying to you: "You see! that is the way you
are in yourself, outside of Me — now come over to
Me and be filled with My Virtue and be filled with
My Love.”

Let yourself sink down into the abyss of your
nothingness, and there you will find He Who has
created you out of nothing, there My Spirit will
hover over your souls as It hovered over the face
of the deep when I created the universe, as It
hovered over Mary when I was conceived by My Spirit
in My Mother. I created you out of nothing and I can
recreate you, I can sanctify you, only out of your
knowledge of your nothingness. When you bring Me
anything else, when you bring Me your 'virtues’
your ’good acts', your 'good thoughts', you degrade
Me to the level of a human maker who needs the proper material in order to produce the object of his art. But I create out of nothingness.
That is what I need, your knowledge of your nothingness. It is not that I do not want you to cultivate virtue.  I want you to cultivate it in the right way, as the farmer cultivates his soil. He does not expect the crop to grow from his cultivating — he plants the seed, I am the seed.
