This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.
On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”

When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.
On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.
 The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."
If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

"My beloved child, unite yourself with Me now in My condemnation, in the realization that My condemnation is mystically, but really and truly, your condemnation with Me and in Me.  Realize, too, that as I was being condemned you were present to Me exactly as you are kneeling beneath My image now, and that you were My joy and consolation as I was condemned because you will to die with Me. And now understand that your condemnation is both just and necessary to your joy and happiness.  Yes, it is My Father and yours Who is condemning you to die, to die to the death of your sins, and especially to die to the death of all those lies by which you have sought your whole life to justify yourself.  Yes, this condemnation is the loving judgment of the Father who decrees that you must die to all your lies, that you must die in Me, the Truth, in order that you may live with Me and in Me, receiving with Me everything from the Father because we have nothing in Ourselves.  That is the meaning of Our condemnation, Mine in My innocence and yours in your guilt, but in My innocence, too.  At the moment of your physical death nothing but the truth will remain, nothing but what is, in Me Who Am, nothing but Truth, in Me Who Am Truth. Then the futility of all your lies will appear in the light of Truth. But that is the death which you are already beginning to die now, with Me, the death to your own death in My death.  And that is the perfect preparation for your final death; I will be with you then as you are with Me now. Do not fear death; death is your friend when you have lived to die in Me."

"As I was accepting My Cross, at that very moment in My Passion, I foresaw you, with all your love for Me, just as you are now.  I was exhausted by the scourging and by the sufferings of the night, but I saw you as you are exhausted now by your scourging in the dark night of your trials, your trials in Me as you were being purified in Me to suffer with Me.  Yes, you, too, have been scourged! I feel your sufferings, your weariness in Mine. Do you understand a little how I suffer in you?  I am with you in all your suffering; I suffer everything for you and with you and in you. You are not alone, as you so frequently think, and the more you unite your suffering with Mine, the more you will let them be Mine, the less alone you will feel.  It is true:  My burden is light, and My yoke is sweet-but you must let it be My burden, you must let Me carry it.
"Yes, you, too, have been scourged. Do you not see a little more now of the depth of My compassion for you in the silence of My suffering? That is the way of My compassion, to suffer with you silently. See My grief for you now!  See!  I am not preoccupied with My Own sufferings. Their whole meaning and purpose is to reassure you of My Love for you in your suffering. Do not think, as some of My misguided children have told you -- or made you feel -- that My purpose here is to convince you that My suffering is so much greater than yours!  No, My purpose is only to show you the depth of My tenderness, My compassion for you, My dearest child. My purpose is not to move you to appreciate My suffering for you, but to convince you of how much I appreciate your suffering for Me.
"See, then, how very much I love you!  See how I have made all your suffering My Own!  Only believe that I love you!  Ah, if only you would believe that!..... And yet, I would not want you to feel sad because you are unable to appreciate and fathom My Love for you. No, I only want you to know how much I love and accept you.  Only come to Me now, and let Me love you. Do not try to suffer for Me first!  That way you will only force your love. But love Me spontaneously by letting Me show you how much I love you first. Then you will want to suffer for Me -- in order to allow Me to give Myself to you.  No, I do not want you to try to force your love.  "Rise after you have sat, you who eat the bread of sorrow."  Rise to suffer after you have sat in contemplation of My Love for you.
"And do not, therefore, take My suffering as a rebuke!  Alas! How little is My Love understood when even My dying for you is interpreted as My rejecting you! -- As though I were saying bitterly:  'Do you see how bad you are?  Even when you see Me dying for you, you cannot love Me!'  No, that is the very opposite of what I would tell you.  What I am saying to you is this: 'Do you see how eager I am to do for you what I know you are unable to do for yourself?!'  Do you understand?  All this I am suffering is made over to you.  I have come to suffer for you because I knew you could not of yourself do what was necessary to make peace with God. I have come to die for you because you could not die for yourself. I have not come to scold you!  My heart is broken to see you the slave of sins you cannot overcome by your own strength. And I am God!  Not only am I suffering what you could not suffer, but My suffering is God's suffering -- and I give you My suffering, God's suffering.  By the power of My Passion not only is it exactly as though you, yourself, had died for your sins-ah, it is so much more than that!  For now it is not merely that in Me you are dying for your sins-in Me you are God dying for your sins!  There is no further price to pay; I have paid for everything.  You must only receive what I have given you.
"I am the Redeemer, not you!  I have bought you back at the great price of My Life, the Life of God. I have given you My Life, not merely as a friend dies for a friend.  No!  But I have given you My Life in the sense that I have made over My Life to you!  In Me you are become God dying for your sins. Everything is paid for.  You have only to receive what I have given you.
"As you see Me receiving My Cross, as you are receiving it with Me, try to understand a little of the Infinite Tenderness of My Love for you. Ah! To think that what I am doing would be interpreted in a way to humiliate you -- you, My dearest child! No!  It is I Who desire to be humiliated, it is I Who am concerned with what you have suffered.  Only let Me love you! Then you will understand!  Then you will see how much I need your generosity -- in order to be able to give Myself to you, to you and to the souls you are destined to bring to Me.  I need you so much!  Come! Let Me show you My Love for you! Then you will forget yourself in Our Work of Redemption.  Only do not be afraid to let Me Love you! Do not feel that you have to do anything but that. Then you will do everything!"
